Quick Tip: Use exFAT For External Drives

If you want to keep an external drive which is read & write capable across both Windows and macOS you don’t need to buy tools or add-ons to read the other OSes native format!

Both OSes fully support the exFAT format! So format your storage with this and you’ll have a fully cross-platform solution ready to go with no extra outlay!

win-exfatInstructions for Windows:

  1. Connect your external media
  2. Open File Explorer and navigate to ‘This PC’
  3. Find your external media and right-click, choose “Format…”
  4. Change the ‘File system’ dropdown to “exFAT” and set the Volume Label if applicable
  5. Click Start

Instructions for macOS:

  1. Connect your external media
  2. Open the media in Finder
  3. On the menu choose Go – screen-shot-2017-02-24-at-14-41-38Utilities
  4. Open ‘Disk Utility’
  5. Wait for the screen to populate and then select your external media
  6. Click ‘Erase’, set the name and choose “exFAT” from the Format drop-down
  7. Click Erase

That’s it – external media ready for sharing between Windows and macOS systems!
